The Tiniest Star of David
The Tiniest Star of David
The Star of David is a special piece for me, personally. Being a Jew from Ukraine, when I was growing up, I could never imagine wearing this symbol of the jewish people because of the severe anti semitism prevalent in the time of the Soviet Union and for centuries before in those lands. When I came to United States, it was the first gift I got from my aunt. I was so surprised and even shocked that I could finally be a proud Jew in the United States without fear of being imprisoned or beat up. No one there would be caught dead wearing this symbol out of fear. Going to a Jewish school when I came here when I was ten years old affirmed that pride. I no longer had to feel shame for being Jewish. But as the recent time shifted and anti semitism has taken on new shape shifting forms, we see that pride can disappear fast even in the free world and be replaced with fear once again. I made this start back in 2008 and it is the tiniest Magen David that I could make. Not because I wasn’t a proud Jew, but because I thought it was very cute for layering. Now, some Jewish people find it dangerous and are fearful of wearing one, so the tiny star makes sense for those who want to wear one but not be afraid. I hope that one day true peace in the world is restored and that no one is ever again afraid of wearing this magical symbol as it has so many beautiful ideas embedded in it.
Its origins come from King David who had it on his shield. It signifies that God is everywhere up, down, North, South, East and West. In the Kabbalah it signifies the spiritual force of God the triangle pointing down merging with the physical form of man the triangle pointing up. The downward triangle is merging with it as we reach upward towards God or the Spiritual force of the Universe, by doing good deeds and actions toward other humans and the Universe as a whole.
